“Return to Nature”

History of Naturopathy

Naturopathyis the application of five elements healing system. It is an art of natural treatment via drugless process. It is considered as the oldest medical system in the world. It is known as the mother of all the therapies. It is the oldest therapy as nature itself and also as the creation of all the creatures as well. Natural way of treatment has been mentioned in Vedas as a Upavaasa (Fast), surya chikitsa (Sun therapy), Aahara Chikitsa (Food therapy), Jala Chikitsa (Water therapy), herbal therapy, etc.

In pauranic period, the King Dasharatha had undergone to use phalahara on the infertility case of his queens. The Devil King Raavana initially used natural treatment but later on due to his nature and lifestyle change, he ordered Vaidyas to make the fast and easy treatment, as a result, they searched and brought medicinal herbs by making liquid to cure the various diseases.

Lord Buddha had told to the monks to use mud, cow dung, cow urine, and ash on snake bite and also advised to use steam bath, hot water bath and sun bath on specific ailments. Religiously it was used to get some of the natural treatments in different communes and religions such as observance of ‘Kalp Vaasa’ (Light fast), Vrtta (Religious fast), worship of Panchatattva (Five elements) on each,  Surya Namaskar, Sun Bath, Water Bath, Earth bath, Herbal bath, Yogasana, Pranayama, Mudras, Mantras, etc. respectively.

In middle of Era, the application of naturopathy minimizes and almost hidden, only somewhere else used to in limit for long period of time. Finally on seventeenth century around, the western scientists and doctors felt the the need of naturopathy and they started natural treatments one by one and finally developed all over the world. Dr. James Currie in 1717 wrote a Book on treatment by water. But Dr. Vincenz applied this, so he was called the father of modern Naturopathy. Similarly, different personages like father Sebastian, Louis Kuhne, Adolf Just, Hippocrates, in different times worked in Naturopathy.

Though, Naturopathy was used to eastern belt of world in very beginning of creation but formally when the book named “New Science of Healing” of Louis Kuhne was translated in Telugu by Shri D. Venkat in 1894 and in Hindi and Urdu by Krishna Swaroop in 1904 and then formally it has been started in India.

Mahatma Gandhi was deeply inspired by Adolf Just’s Book “Return to Nature and studied it completely and used himself at first and then used to members of his family, Ashram and others gradually and published developed through articles and direct work on naturopathy and then got popularity in India, Nepal and other surrounding zones. Then inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Naturopathy treatment system has been developed formally establishing the Hospitals and institutions. Some of very popular names of India are Krishna Swaroopop, Mararji Desai, Dr. Laxmi Narayan, Dr, Vitthaldas Modi, etc.

BUDDHA JAYANTI & PURNIMA AND BUDDHA

BUDDHA JAYANTI & PURNIMA AND BUDDHA

“Happy Buddha Jayanti” to all beloved souls for peace, love and light

Memory of Buddha by Japa;
“Om Mani Padme Hum.”
May Lord Buddha enlighten to all on the path of love, peace and truth.

Background:

Buddha Purnima, the traditional Buddhist holiday is celebrated in Nepal and across the globe like India, Bhutan, Tibet on May 07, today. This day is a very important commemorative holiest day for people of Buddhist faith and general populace in Nepal is regarded to be the day when Lord Buddha got enlightenment. This is the 2564th Birth Anniversary of Gautama Buddha today. It is also known as Kurma Jayanti or Buddha Jayanti, the festival lies during the month of Vaisakh as it usually falls during the month of May and is celebrated by the Hindu community , especially in Nepal as well.

The word ‘Buddha’ means ‘intellect’ or ‘one who is awake’ or also the enlightened one. The Buddha was born in 563 BC as Siddhartha Gautama into the royal family of a small kingdom in Kapilavastu District, Nepal. Siddharth grew without ever knowing about the miseries that were faced by commoners. Siddharth became more inquisitive about the life outside his palace. He did and gave up all materialistic pleasure.  Although he was the prince living with all the availabilities and possibilities in the palace, out of his sheltered life upon realizing that life includes the harsh realities of old age, sickness, beggar and death which then made him to seek about the meaning of life.

This encouraged Siddharth to choose this path. One day, at midnight, he finally left his palace to discover the answers about these questions. For seven years, he underwent several austerities. After enlightenment, he was known as Gautam Buddha. The supreme light of enlightenment dawned on Buddha on the Vaisakha Purnima Day, under a Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya. At the age of 80, Gautam Buddha left the world on the full moon day of Vaisakha. He attained Nirvana at Bodhagaya. It is one of the most sanctified places of pilgrimage.

BUDDHA JAYANTI

As per the Buddhist legend, his wife Yashodhara, his first disciple Ananda, his charioteer Channa, and his horse Kantaka were all born on this sacred day. The Bodhi Tree, under which he attained nirvana, was also believed to have been created on this day.

As his views, everyone had the ability to unfold their potential to its fullest capacity. The teachings of Buddhism may be seen as attempts by the Buddha to fulfill this vision and to help people grow towards first in peace, love and intellects, then showed the path of Enlightenment as well.

Buddha Jayanti or ‘Buddha Purnima’ is celebrated in Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Gautam Buddha is one of the greatest spiritual Masters across the world. His messages for peace, love and light, also known as the ‘guiding light of Asia,’ won the millions of devotees and lovers across the world. He is considered as the 9th ‘avatar’ of Godhead of Lord Vishnu. He was the founder of Buddhism, the religious and philosophical system that has produced a great culture across southern and eastern Asia. Gautam Buddha’s message spread from Nepal and India, and soon it was assimilated into many cultures. Traditionally this festival is observed by Buddhists as ‘Vaisakha.’

Do not dwell in the past; do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment. – Buddha

The history behind the festival: BUDDHA JAYANTI

Vedic literature tells that Lord Buddha was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and was sent to earth to spread the message of non-violence and peace and convey love and true knowledge to all living creatures. Buddhist lovers and devotees celebrate and honor the major events which shaped Buddhism including his birth, enlightenment and passing away. Devotees also visit special shrines and undertake a pilgrimage to pay their respects at Lord Buddha’s birthplace. Mahabodhi Tree is one such special shrine. To seek peace, tranquility, intellect and ward off negative energy, devotees offer prayers, candles, flowers and joss-sticks at the shrine. Many even spend the day meditating, chant Buddhist mantras or reading important religious texts and scriptures. Today spiritual Saadhaka meditates on “FULL MOON’ for peace and prosperity.
Many also observe a fast, especially in the Hindu community to pay homage to the full moon, which is considered very auspicious. People also worship Lord Satyanarayan, holding pooja, fast or vrtta who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu too. It indeed is a special day of learning for holy worshipers. In Nepal, all Kiranti people in the country and abroad on the occasion of the great festival of the Kirants, celebrate the Ubhauli festival and the diverse cultural traditions in the country help enhance mutual trust and goodwill, and also in building a prosperous social structure.

Buddha Purnima has been a very important festival which highlights the significance of Gautam Buddha’s teachings of life, love, peace and spirituality. One of the holiest festivals, Buddha Jayanti, celebrates Gautam Buddha’s Birth Day, his Enlightenment Day, and his passing away Day as well.

BUDDHA JAYANTI

We all know, and are very much known in the world for reclaiming that “the Buddha was born in Nepal”. Buddha has indeed become an icon of national unity, identity of country, pride and “spiritual hero”, but as a matter of fact, having him born in the place which is by its virtue located now inside the geographic territory of Nepal, but from other perspectives of the millions of Buddhists are living in all over the world, whether we have some space in our heart or mind for the man who is named the Buddha.

While being proud of Buddha, only a few take time to learn some basic teachings of Buddhism. We need to follow the right path of Buddha as teachings and meditating. Buddha did talk only about peace and light; he also showed the applied way by spiritual sadhana. Major path is to meditate like Vipasana Dhyana, Japa of Mantras, Prayers, etc. Apart from this, now, after a long hardship, a Lumbini Buddhist University has been set up and classes of higher education have started. Anybody can be benefited from there.

SHAMATHA OR MINDFULNESS DHYANA (MEDITATION):

Shamatha (mindfulness) is a well-known Buddhist practice that focuses on developing calmness, clarity and equanimity. With the proper guidance and commitment, the cultivation of these qualities can ultimately lead to deep inner peace. The initial stages of mindfulness meditation are essentially non-denominational and can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their faith tradition.

The basis of Shamatha, or mindfulness Dhyana is:

  1. Sit in a comfortable at any meditation posture; find a pose that doesn’t hurt your back or legs. Keep your back straight and try to find a happy medium between too rigid and too relaxed. Totally prepare yourself physically, mentally and emotionally.
  2. Observe your breath: You don’t have to manipulate your breath, use abdominal breathing or have long, deep in-breaths and out-breaths. Just breathe normally and pay full attention to your breathing process, one breath at a time. Keep your awareness focused but be gentle; just be witness.
  3. Acknowledge the thoughts that still into your mind without engaging them. Simply observe them and let go. Come back to the breath. Just watch and hear the movement and sounds “So Ham”. Let the thought arise, touch on it gently, and then let it go but no judgment, no identify.
  4. Stay 15 to 20 minutes silently and consciously.
  5. Gently get back consciously watching the breath, the body and then release it.

Science of Nature and Naturopathy

Need of study of science of Nature and Naturopathy

Nature is the mother of all existences and also the sources of all creations. Finding knowledge and experiences through difference sources and process in order to fulfill the certain purpose or need is from the science. The study of science makes any issues easier, clear, usable and rational. Nature is foundation or right spot to attempt the better understanding. Everything is here in nature. Naturopathy, a treatment and a healing theory throughout five elements, is typically based on nature and her five elements which are the root causes of every creation. So ether element is the first element according to the origin of panchatattva is basically used in nature cure system.

Naturopathy is not only a system of treatment; it shows a simple way of living. Initially one takes the nature cure and then he is attracted by this system. Finally he sees a ray of hope on it. Keeping this in mind, it has been felt that there is most need of this study about ether element therapy which can give proper guidance and clarity to those who are students, teachers, doctors, patients and other interested persons to naturopathy.

 Introduction of Nature :

Nature is formed of panchamahaabhoota which is a platform of these five elements. On this platform, matter and energy are existed that means one by one creation was appeared in this world/universe. Each beings and matters took same qualities and nature of Panchatattva. We are born in nature, cared, protected and collapsed by nature. Srishti (Creation), Sthiti (Operation) and Pralaya (Destruction) are the fundamentals rules of Nature or the Adrishya Shakti (unseen Energy / divine power). Nature creates, saves and makes us sick as well as and ultimately treats, heals, promotes, and rejuvenates us. This is the cycle of nature and beings. Nature is a healer and gives healing to us. She has the great power by which every creature is being benefited. Naturally we like the nature, we love the nature, we enjoy in nature, and we feel fresh and energetic. We are able to gain the spiritual power in nature. So use of five elements of nature differently in treatment and healing process is very effective and natural process.

1.2 Panchatattva and their origin

It is said that before creation took place, there was nothing except the supreme power or cosmic intelligence.  In the beginning, firstly Aakaasha tattva (Ether) element with its subtle form ‘Shabda’ (Sound) was appeared by the power of supreme soul; later Vaayu Tattva (air element) with its subtle form ‘Sparsha’ (Touch) was appeared; then Agni tattva ( Fire Element) with its subtle form ‘Rupa’ (Form); then Jala Tattva ( Water) element with its subtle form ‘Rasa’ ( Juice/drop); then Prithivi Tattva (Earth ) element with its subtle form ‘Gandha’ (Smell). Each element takes the quality of previous element which is given below.

Element Name                                           Subtle Form & Quality

Aakaasha (Ether)                                                     Shabda (Sound)

Vaayu (Air)                                                                 Sparsha (Touch) + Sound

Agni (Fire)                                                                  Rupa (Form) + Touch + Sound

Jala (Water)                                                               Rasa (Juice) + Form + Touch + Sound

Prithivi (Earth)                                                          Gandha (Smell) + Juice + Form + Touch + Sound

1.3 Panchatattva and Body Natural Anatomy

Human being is one unit of supreme soul or nature. As the union of panchatattva that is nature, similarly human being is also composed of panchatattva Akasha, Vayu, Agni, Jala and Prithivi. So we can find these five elements in different forms in the body.

Elements in Nature                                   Elements in Body

Ether                                               Cellular space, vessels, cavities, tracts, holes, canal and space

Air                                                    Respiration, circulation, communication, hearing, and motion

Fire                                                  Oxidation process, body temperature

Water                                             Blood, Lymph, Juice, Mucous, all the body fluids

Earth                                               All Muscles and Bones

Psychological Stress During COVID-19 Quarantine And Yoga Benefits

By Erika Bam

PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS DURING COVID-19: QUARANTINE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF YOGA.

Psychology defines stress as feeling strain and pressure. Stress is a type of psychological pain however small amounts of stress may be accepted as normal and even healthy. Positive stress helps improve physical performance and mental analysis as it creates the ability to motivate and adapt with the environment especially during crisis but excessive amounts of stress affect our physical, physiological and mental diseases.

In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of a new corona virus disease, COVID-19, to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. COVID-19 also CORONA Virus is caused by SARS-CoV-2(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2) which affects mammals and birds.

“The disease was first identified in 31st, December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019-20 corona virus pandemic.”

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness. Oldage, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic

At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments. WHO will continue to provide updated information as soon as clinical findings become available and in time we shall understand that the incubation period for vaccines is not less than 18 months.

Countries like the United States, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain and Germany are facing huge crises and are front liners to corona cases and deaths however the outbreak was china it seems to manage the death rate.

In the context of Nepal more than 49+ people have been diagnosed as Covid-19 positive and 16 are recovered till date.

The only prevention measure to stop the pandemic all infected countries has regulated quarantine. The world has suddenly rested. There is a break on the regular schedule of human life and work format. Huge impact on Socio-economical life globally has been felt.

Change in pattern of life, the fear of pandemic, inability to apply the preventive measure from onset of viral infection has resulted in stressful outcome in context of economy and human lifestyle.

The stress (economic, psychological), anxiety and problem (economic, social, global) people are experiencing during quarantine will bring severe negative outcomes if the international authority (WHO) and national authority is unable to facilitate individual , nation as well as globally.

QUARANTINE AND YOGA:

The word quarantine comes from quarantena, meaning “forty days”, used in the 14th-15th-century Venetian language and designating the period that all ships were required to be isolated before passengers and crew could go ashore during the Black Death plague epidemic

In recent context, it is wise for us to understand the importance of quarantine until the authentic and considerable medicines and preventive measures get identified. The suggestion of quarantine is “STAY HOME,STAY SAFE” and the period of quarantine should be wisely manifested to avoid or overcome boredom and stress.

It’s an important time to recognize the essence of family members, communication and building-up relations. Showing empathy and above all utilizing time to understand the self-understanding, self-recognition of psychological status of self to overcome the stress and relevant outcome and crisis.

YOGA can be the best and the wisest option during COVID-19 lock down simply because yoga manages the stress and anxiety without intake of medicine, basically its medicine itself. Yoga is a journey of self, throughout the self, to the self (internalizing).

Yogash Chitta Vritti Nirodhah” – Yoga + Sh + Chitta + Vritti + Nirodhah: Yoga means the cessation of fluctuated thoughts in chitta. Chitta is a composition of four fundamentals e.g. mind, ego, intellect and consciousness. Maharshi Patanjali gives his formal definition of yoga for the classical school of Yoga itself: Yoga is stilling  of the changing  states of the mind or stilling of all thought.

Through yoga we can heal on physical level, mental level and spiritual/soul level. Yoga asanas are very significant in helping the physical body (maintains the body weight, flexibility, strength) and also prepares one for meditation. Pranayama (breathe act/control, breathe extension) directly influences and immunizes the respiratory and cardiac system. Meditation is the ultimate step of yoga from which one can get holistic benefits –the gateway of enlightenment.

Covid-19 is associated with infecting the pulmonary system as well as cardiac system so it is recommended to practice pranayama by various medical practitioners and yoga experts however to increase the physical strength/physical mobility asana must be practiced. And above all meditation should be included compulsorily to manifest the expected benefit of yoga.

For each of us who are quarantined for our own shake of physical and mental health it is important to invest 1-2 hour in yoga practice early morning and in evening or 4-6 hrs after intake of food.

Mother’s Day (Aamaa) – आमा

“Maatri Devo Bhavah” Mother is Goddess.

‘Apadi mataiv sharanam’. “Mother is uttered in times of calamity”

Happy Mother’s Day to all beloved souls, Merciful Mothers and all rested peaceful Mother’s Souls.

Today is considered as the day to see the mother’s face. . This day is also addressed as Maatri-aunsee, Maatri-Divas, Maataatirtha Aunsee , आमा (मातातीर्थ औंशी)  etc. Today children go to their ama’s/mum’s place to see their mother’s face. They honor their ama ( mata ) by giving her sweets and gifts.

Mata is the power of Goddess, source of feminine energy in Kundalini Yoga. She is herself source of purity, will, action, love, aliveness and full of compassion, so no need to go elsewhere and see entire Mother within you. She is always with you. Out of Tina Rina (three indebt) of Maatri (आमा) Rina, Pitri Rina, and Guru Rina; Maatri Rina (Mother’s indebt) is more priceless. All we are indebted of her. So, just Salute and Gratitude with total energy (Power, kindness, Love, compassion and Intelligence) remembering mother even not in physical form, also unseen supper compassion that energizes and awakens our absolute spirituality forever.

The Nepali version of Mother’s Day is different from the Modern world. The festival to respect and show love to one’s ama’s / mums in Nepal.  People celebrate this’s day on the new moon day of Baisakh, the first month in Nepali calendar. This year, in 2020, the festival falls on April 23, 2020. The festival is commonly known as ‘Aamako Mukh Herne Din’. The literal translation of Aamako Mukh Herne Din is “the Day to see the Mother’s Face”.

The mother(आमा) carries the child in her womb for nine months and gives the birth. One cannot even imagine creation without a mother. The ama creates a selfless child by giving the baby food, water, air, nutrients, and culture rites. There is no one in the world more revered and compassionate than the ama who takes care of the baby even after birth and builds a complete personality by nurturing it.

Mother’s Day is observed as giving special emphasis to amas. Even though the holiday is not given officially in Nepal but the people celebrate with all the happiness and love towards their Mums. Mum keeps a very important place in our life. Without a ama, our life would be dull and a life without colors. Mother’s are really special to us.

We must learn to respect ama’s and should know to value ama place in our lives. Mum’s shape our lives in a definite way. We must learn the importance of mums / ama in our lives. this’s Day celebrates the spirit of motherhood.

The word mother in Sanskrit is very popular.

The meaning of the Atharva Veda, “Maatraa Bhavatu Sammanaa”, signifies the importance of the mother holding the body in the womb. ‘

Similarly, ‘Aapadi Mataiva Sharanam’ means Ama is remembered in times of calamity. If there is a fight or a collision, Ama from everyone’s mouth! The phrase comes out spontaneously because even in our subconscious mind, Mum is firmly entrenched.

It is also said-

“Maatraa samam Naasti Shareera Poshanam”. There is no one else who provides the same amount of care and nourishment for the body as the ama. This applies not only to humans but also to other creatures. The bird travels far and wide for the young to bring food to the beak even if it does not eat it. Why cows try to lick a newborn calf? Why they try to move the baby monkey, they get up in a crowd? All happens because they have the same affection for their children.

Mother’s love is unconditional and never-ending. We must celebrate this day to show appreciation for our mother. We must appreciate all the things that a mum has done to us. Mum’s have been called the glue that sticks the family together but the glue I often underappreciated.

There is no one else in the world who loves a creature like a mother. The virtues of such a mother cannot be described in words. Creation has got continuity through ama’s sacrifice, penance and sacrifice. Since creation is not possible without the mother, the child should always be grateful to the mother.

It is said that no one can repay these three debts like ama’s loan i.e. mother’s loan, father’s loan and master loan etc. However, the burden of mother’s loan can be lightened to some extent by showing heartfelt respect to the ama.

The mother-आमा- is the earth because she nurtures and protects the children with endurance like the earth. No one is more likely to love a child as a mum would for no reason. Therefore, respecting the mother is the first duty of the child. In order to fulfill this duty, it is customary in Nepali society to look at the mother’s face every year on Mother’s Day.

The story connected with Matatirtha Day- Saabhaar

The seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Myrada Purushoktam, came to Matatirtha one day while walking in the tram of exile. Seeing him as unfamiliar and new, the locals attacked him. As a result, a fierce battle broke out between Ram and the locals. Due to the war, both sides became anxious with thirst.

At the same time, Sita also felt thirsty. While searching for water, Lord Rama praised Ganga as no water was found anywhere.

‘Mata Gangasamo Tirtha Pita Pushkar Me Vach:’

After chanting the mantra three times, Rama shot an arrow at the ground and a pool of water was formed at the place where the arrow hit. There, Sita ji had a vision of the whole universe. When she got a vision of the universe, her form reached imaged on the stone in the pool.

According to another story,

IN Dewapar Yuga, a time thousands of years ago, an orphan shepherd boy was eating his lunch. While sitting beside the Matatirtha pond and eating bread, he accidentally dropped a piece of bread in the pond. As he tried to grab the bread from the pond, he saw his own mother’s face on the reflection. He was pleasantly surprised to see his dead ama’s lovely face in the pond.

He was so happy to see the face that he started crying. By coincidence, the day was the new moon day of Baisakh. The mum image in the pond told the boy not to cry and told that she was always with the son. She also promised to meet him every year, on the same day at that same location.

When other people in the village heard about the story from the shepherd boy, they also rushed to the pond. All those who looked into the pond saw their mum in the reflection. Although this is a fable and nobody actually sees images in their ama’s in the reflection of water. Thousands of people go to the place to pay respect to their ama. It is the strong moral faith and really makes people honour their self.

To give an image to worship, a statue of a woman named ‘Aama’ has also been constructed in the place.

Jai Aama!- आमाJai Prithvi !!

Hari Om Tat Sat!

SURYA KRIYA YOGA

SURYA KRIYA YOGA – I

By SWAMI YOG SUBODH (Yogacharya Dr. Subodh Simkhada) – International Yoga Guru

Yoga is getting popularity all over the world. But still there is no reachable of right message of Yoga among the people. People understand about yoga as the physical training or the fitness programs. They do still not understand its value and goal of this glorious science. The ultimate goal is even infinite but the direction is towards Samadhi, Moksha, Nirvaana or something like this. So for this righteous way of life, there are different means or paths or kriyas for union of life. Himalayan Yoga Academy gives the real concept of Yoga in integrated and philosophical footing.

Surya kriya is one of the yogic practices practiced since thousands of years purposed to activate the solar power or the fire energy in the body for the balance and blissful life. Surya means ‘Sun’ and kriya means ‘Act’. So Surya Kriya means the process of inner energy activation. This kriya generates inner energy, activates physical body and mind and balance the life. This process opens the Manipur Chakra and increases the solar energy in the body. Himalayan Yoga Academy provides these types of Yoga kriya training course as well.

Veda says Surya is the soul of whole existence. The earth rounds the sun. It purifies the water and makes the food for all beings. In ancient time, there were two types of saadhanaa e.g. Surya Kriya and Yajna. Sun is the food of Future. Sun is the medicine of the future. Surya kriya balances the lunar and solar energy throughout the Ida and Pingala energy channels and brings the stability of the body, stillness of mind and equanimity of consciousness. Our guests, students and yoga lovers will be luckier because they could get varieties of courses of Yoga on same venue at Himalayan Yoga Academy.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series

Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series

By : Swami Yog Subodh

Yoga is the union of inner self and the cosmic intelligence. Yoga is for getting good health, happiness and harmony. Yoga is completely experimental science that uncovers inner peace, inner purity, inner rest and inner relaxation, then links to groom entire potency. Yoga is the complete science of being. Dhyana (Meditation) is the final key in yoga Practice. Physical practice or Asanas is one of the major pillars of whole yogic mission. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the complete Asana series for intense physical fitness; it strongly grounds for Yoga sadhana. It combines some of the means of Yoga like Prayer, Asana, Breath, Bandha and Focus (drishti) for optimum merits.

Ashtanga Vinyasa is the combination of yoga asanas (poses) and is teaching style of asanas by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois (July 26, 1915- May 18, 2009). In fact, the term ‘Ashtanga’ means eight limbs of yoga (i.e. yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahar, dharana, dhyana, and Samadhi) as a compete pattern of Yoga Sadhana mentioned in Paatanjala Yoga Darshana. But here Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series means mere a sequence of asanas for regular practice in his style.  Vinyasa here means careful linkage of breath with

  • movement of body and
  • static position of the body
  • keeping awareness on body, breath and thoughts.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series includes

  1. Opening Prayer
  2. Surya Namaskara A (9 steps)
  3. Surya Namaskara B (17 steps)
  4. Standing Asanas
  5. Sitting Asanas
  6. Lying Asanas
  7. Savasana
  8. Closing Prayer

There are 71 asanas sequenced in primary series. The powerful vinyasa flow to link one asana with the other is the distinction of this technique. The vinyasa flow strengthens arms, hand, torso and core. The continuous vinyasa-flow after each asana keeps making the body warm which helps to go extreme level of asana due to better flexibility. This also helps the body to do counter stretch. Ujjayi breath and Drishti (gaze) along with asana is inseparable part in Pattabhi’s technique. Ujjyi breath means breathing with sound during the asana produced through the throat.

Ujjayi breath helps

  • to give abundance oxygen during the practice, thus recharges and invigorates the body
  • to clear the blockage of nadis and purify them
  • to make a perfect oscillation of inner-ventral blood pressure.  The internal organs get massaged with this oscillation leaving them healthier and stronger

You cannot separate the throat breath (almost like the Ujjayi breath) during the holding moment of asana.

  • Ujjayi reduces the anxiety and the stress keeping mind in the present.
  • It increases mindfulness and consciousness
  • It deepens the breath and helps in formal practice of pranayama.
  • It relaxes the muscles and go deeper to the asana
  • It activates parasympathetic nervous system. This results peaceful and tranquil mind.
  • It creates inward attention and helps to feel the body more and more.
  • It gives effect to the subtle body and helpful to awaken Kundalini.

There are six sequences of Ashtanga Vinyasa. After 1-2 years regular practice of Ashtanga vinyasa, you will be prepared for the intermediate series. The series is very effective for making body energetic, strong and flexible. It makes a great change in you if practiced regularly with dedication.
