‘Shiro’ means head and ‘Dhara’ means flow. Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic therapy that involves gentle pouring of medicinal oil, milk or buttermilk over the forehead to stimulate the pituitary gland. This subtle yet deeply calming treatment begins with warm herbal oil massage and finishes with the shirodhara to create a profound state of peace in body and mind.
Sirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière’s disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties. it is also effective in treating mental conditions such as anxiety, and mental stress. The calming effect produced by Shirodhara is similar to that obtained with meditation.
By working on the cerebral system, this therapy helps improve the senses and relax the nervous system. It is considered as a tool to relieve stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia. It also helps improve sleep patterns and memory.
it is thought to work by relaxing the hypothalamus in the brain. It can also normalize the functions of hormones that regulate sleep and emotions.
Contraindications: It is advisable that persons suffering from brain tumor, recent neck injury, abrasions or cuts on the head, fever/chills, acute illness, nausea, vomiting, severe weakness and exhaustion avoid Shirodhara. It should not be given to women in their third trimester of pregnancy.
